{Travel} Flying High – Part 1

With my husband’s 30th birthday approaching, I started to wonder what memorable things we could do to ring in this special milestone. We have done the spa thing and stayed over at hotels and let’s face it – as much as we enjoy it , the thing is that when you have experienced similar things, the memories start becoming hazy … and you just want there to be that moment. You know the one where you can clearly remember how you spent that special day. Yeah, I wanted him to have that. ❤

This time I really wanted to surprise him and do something ‘epic‘ (yes, that’s what I told him it was going to be) and also an experience that would be a first for both of us. He is an amazing person and I wanted him to understand how special he is to me so I knew I would have to pull out all the stops.

Despite my unhealthy fear of heights, I really wanted to conquer it and at the same time make some fabulous memories with my huz. After some google research, I came across Sky Adventures (link here) who have really great packages at various prices so you can choose what suits your budget.

Travel. Go to as many places as you can. You can always make money but you can’t always make memories.

So a couple of weeks before Hubby’s birthday I contacted Rhod at Sky Adventures to book the Heli and Game Drive Package (Tour 6). He was super nice and answered the crazy amount of questions that I had , and in no time here I was, booking this amazing experience for the two of us. There is about an hour of flying on this tour and boy , did we have the greatest time (okay, so I totally thought about that flying scene from ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ 🙂 Who wouldn’t?)

Our pilot Marshant (what a cool and very tall guy) called me on the morning to confirm that I would need to be at the airport at 7.45am to sign some paperwork as our game drive was scheduled for 9am. So we got an early start on a Sunday morning and off we went , feeling ever so VIP-ish and giddy with excitement. I couldn’t wait to see hubby’s face when he saw what we were doing to celebrate!

Once we arrived, we headed straight down to Starlite Aviation where we were greeted by our pilot and taken down to the hangar – we relaxed in the comfy waiting room while taking selfies while our heli was refuelled. To say, we were a bit nervous and excited at the same time would be an understatement. My husband was so chuffed that we would actually be doing this and he had no idea we were off to a game drive either so that just added to the suspense of it all.

You should know:

  • 50% Deposit required upfront and balance payable 48 hours before wheels up
  • Wear a hat and some sunscreen, removable layers are always good
  • Flight leaves from Virginia Airport
  • Required to be there 20 min earlier to complete some paperwork
  • Make sure your phone and camera is fully charged

The view from the top was absolutely breathtaking and we just looked at each other in awe during the trip to Tala Game Reserve. Seeing everything from that altitude puts life into perspective and makes one realise how little we really are in the grand scheme of things. The scenery is beautiful and really unmatched, your eyes begin to drink in the lush greenery and you can’t seem to look away. It was truly a unique experience which I think everyone should experience at least once. We were both on a high (no pun intended, harhar) after the trip and could not believe that we were lucky enough to have done it.

Check out below for some of the pics I took from the heli and keep your eyes peeled for Part 2 where I will talk about our fabulous game drive at Tala. You don’t want to miss it!
