Beverly Hills Hotel – Umhlanga Review

where-to-stay (2)

When searching for accommodation, sites like Tripadvisor and Booking.com have become increasingly popular in offering others honest views from real guests who have stayed at your accommodation of interest. So I thought it would be a good idea to offer my opinion on the very popular Beverly Hills Hotel in Umhlanga.

Last year marked the 1st year of marriage for my hubby and I and instead of travelling out of the city, we decided that we would stay over at a really nice hotel right here in Durban. I have always been curious about the 5-star rated Beverly Hills as its name has always been synonymous with luxury and class . Lucky for me — the hotel is one of the preferred providers of accommodation on the Discovery Vitality plan and I got our accommodation at a reduced rate. Discounts are always welcomed 🙂

So, this is what I thought about this famous Hotel:

Price: If you are on Discovery Vitality , depending on your status – you can get up to 50% off the booking price. However if you’re looking at the normal price, you can expect to pay anything from R3000 and up for a standard room, depending on how close to your check-in date you book and whether it is during a peak period. My advice is to book early, this hotel gets fully booked real quick.

Ease of Booking: I booked online on the Discovery website and within a few hours I was emailed the relevant documentation and confirmation of my booking. You can book online on the Beverly Hills website here and I presume that its just as simple. I was required to fill out my preferences and email through. I thought this was great – it requested information on what you may be celebrating, if you needed a transfer to the airport, and even if you required a prayer mat.

Location: This Hotel is situated in Umhlanga and the beach is at your doorstep, literally! It is near to all the touristy spots and within walking distance to the beach. The balcony is not as big as one would hope but it does give you a great view of the ocean and the lights of the ships in the night is truly a sight. I loved watching the sun disappear on the horizon with my husband , it was breath-taking 🙂 The view is absolutely unobstructed and incredibly beautiful.

Room: The room is at an average size – I have stayed at 4-star hotels and there isn’t much difference. There is only a shower in the room and no bathtub. The bathroom was stocked with some Charlotte Rhys Products 🙂 I would have loved to have a bathtub but I guess I can’t be choosy. I think its my love of self-catering units talking 😐

Cleanliness: I cannot fault the guys on this one. I am really fussy about cleanliness and hygiene in hotels. With so many guests, it is easy to let things go and a new guest can notice the age of the room due to its constant use. I didn’t notice any dust or stains anywhere, the bathroom was immaculate and there wasn’t a single crease on the bed. It felt like we were the first couple to stay in that room and I think that’s how anyone wants to feel.

Housekeeping Service: I advised the hotel prior to my arrival that I would need an iron and ironing board as we didn’t require their services (I prefer ironing my own clothes – I’m quite picky about that 😐 ) but we had to call them a few times while we were there to get them to bring it to our room. We also had some dirty dishes which took a good couple of hours before it was removed. However, they were awesome in coming to make our bed and put the cute swan thingy on the bed (and some choccies too 🙂 )

Breakfast: The rates include breakfast and what a spread there is! There is a menu that has all the elements of a South African Brekkie (unfortunately it’s not halaal 😦 )and all these awesome pastries and fruit and so much more. Needless to say, we made a beeline for the  Croissants (at least). You can sit inside if the weather is not the best but on a summer’s day you can sit out on the deck and soak up some sunshine .

Overall Service: There is an amount that is reserved on arrival for incidentals, it would have been cool if I was advised but no one had  told me about this. I also did let them know that all alcohol should be removed from the room but when we arrived, it was still in the bar fridge. I loved the fact that when we arrived we were greeted by balloons and strawberries – gosh , we felt so special and it really did make our anniversary that much more uhhhh-mazing!!!  Although there were a few things that could be improved , the overall feel of the hotel and the service was really top-notch. I would definitely recommend that you stay there if you are looking for a luxury hotel in a great location with the best amenities.
